Background

He joined in April 1969, and served as President of Honda Racing and Managing Director of Honda R&D in May 1987, President of Honda of America Manufacturing in June 1996 and President of Honda R&D in June 1998. A career employee who had passed through racing, the R&D company and North American production, he became President of Honda Motor in June 2003. He had neither blood ties to the founding family nor a shareholding to back him.

Education: Waseda University, School of Science and Engineering, Applied Chemistry (1969)

Selection

In June 2003 he succeeded Hiroyuki Yoshino as President. In the fiscal year ended March 2003, just before, consolidated net sales were ¥7,971.4 billion and net income ¥426.6 billion. Net income for the following FY ended March 2004 was ¥464.3 billion, with strength in North America pushing profits to a record high. The appointment in effect placed an engineer who had headed the R&D company and the North American plant at the top of the parent, under an earnings structure increasingly dependent on the United States.

Initiatives

In January 2004 he established Honda Motor (China) Investment to oversee the China business, expanding local production through two joint ventures, Guangzhou Honda and Dongfeng Honda. On July 18, 2007, Guangzhou Honda announced that it would launch an original China-only brand not using the Honda name, targeting 2010, and that it would open an R&D center with a high-speed test course at a cost of ¥30.0 billion.
