Background
He joined Isuzu Motors in April 1978 and became a Director in June 2007. He became Executive Vice President in April 2014 and, a year and two months later, Representative Director and President in June 2015, 37 years after joining. After stepping down as President in April 2023, he remained in management as Representative Director, Chairman and CEO.
Selection
His predecessor was Susumu Hosoi. In the fiscal year ended March 2015, the year before, consolidated net sales were ¥1,879.4 billion, operating income ¥171.1 billion and net income ¥117.0 billion; sales were up ¥118.6 billion from the previous year while operating income was down ¥3.1 billion from ¥174.2 billion. The change came a year and two months after he became Executive Vice President. It appears to have been a generational change at a time when profits had plateaued even as sales grew.
Initiatives
Consolidated net sales grew from ¥1,926.9 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2016 to ¥3,195.5 billion in FY ended March 2023, and operating income from ¥171.6 billion to ¥253.5 billion. In FY ended March 2021 net sales fell to ¥1,908.1 billion and operating income to ¥95.7 billion, but recovered to ¥2,514.2 billion in FY ended March 2022. Over the same period consolidated employees increased by 8,000, from 36,224 to 44,299, and the expansion in scale was accompanied by acquisitions.
