Background

Susumu Hosoi joined Isuzu Motors in April 1973 and served as President of Isuzu Motors Asia Ltd. from May 1996, Executive Vice President of Isuzu Motors America Inc. from April 1997 and its President from February 1998. In December 1998 he returned to the parent as head of the Corporate Planning Office, became head of the Business Planning Office in the Planning and Finance Division in October 2001, and joined the board in June 2002. His career alternated between running local subsidiaries in Asia and the U.S. and the parent's planning division.

Selection

In June 2007 he succeeded Yoshinori Ida as President, with Ida moving to Representative Director and Chairman. Hosoi had become Executive Vice President in April 2006, so it took him a year and two months to go from Executive Vice President to President. It came the year after GM sold all its shares in April 2006, and in the fiscal year ended March 2007, before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥1,662.9 billion and operating income ¥107.0 billion, the fourth straight year of sales growth. The change entrusted building sales channels after the end of the alliance to a man who had led overseas subsidiaries.

Initiatives

In his second year, the fiscal year ended March 2009, the company posted a net loss of ¥26.8 billion, and consolidated net sales fell to ¥1,080.9 billion in FY ended March 2010. Major shareholders for FY ended March 2010 included Mitsubishi Corporation with 9.22%, ITOCHU with 7.96% and Toyota Motor with 5.89%. In April 2013 the company set up the sales finance company Isuzu Leasing Service, and in October integrated three companies including I Metal Technology into the joint holding company IJT Technology Holdings through a share transfer. Consolidated net sales recovered to ¥1,879.4 billion and operating income to ¥171.1 billion in FY ended March 2015.
