Background

Born in Gifu Prefecture in 1902, he graduated from Tokyo University of Commerce in March 1928 and joined the automobile department of Tokyo Ishikawajima Shipyard that April. He continued on at Tokyo Automobile Industries from August 1937, becoming Managing Director in December 1952 and Senior Managing Director in January 1962. He became President in June 1965, 37 years after joining, a commerce graduate amid a board dominated by engineers.

Education: Tokyo University of Commerce (now Hitotsubashi University) (1928)

Selection

His predecessor was Naomichi Kusunoki. In January 1962 Kusunoki was promoted to President and Eikichi Ohashi to Senior Managing Director at the same time, and three and a half years later, in June 1965, Kusunoki moved to Chairman and Ohashi took over the presidency. In the fiscal year ended April 1965, the year before, net sales were ¥112.9 billion and net income ¥4.1 billion, down ¥1.1 billion from ¥5.2 billion the previous year. The change came as profits began to thin even as sales grew.

Initiatives

Over his five years in office net sales grew 1.8 times, from ¥112.9 billion in the fiscal year ended April 1965 to ¥200.3 billion in FY ended April 1970. Net income, however, fell from ¥4.1 billion to ¥3.4 billion over the same period, and in FY ended April 1971, just after he stepped down, ordinary income all but vanished and net income fell to ¥0.4 billion. With profitability thinning as scale grew, he handed the presidency to Executive Vice President Torao Aramaki in June 1970.
