Background
Takeshi Ino joined Isuzu Motors in 1962, came up through heavy vehicle development and research and testing, and became a Director in 1990. He served as president of the Isuzu Ceramics Research Institute from 1993 and of the Isuzu Central Research Institute from 1995. His successor Yoshinori Ida also held the presidency of the Isuzu Central Research Institute alongside his post as Senior Managing Director, making it a post filled by officers of the parent. After managing the engineering side, he rose to Executive Vice President.
Selection
In June 1998 he succeeded Kazuhira Seki as President. In the fiscal year ended March 1998, before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥1,799.6 billion, down from ¥1,923.2 billion the previous year, and net income had shrunk from ¥9.5 billion to ¥6.0 billion. In FY ended March 1999 net sales fell further to ¥1,619.1 billion. As commercial vehicle sales dwindled, the company entrusted its top post to an engineer who had come up through heavy vehicle development.
Initiatives
In September 1998, three months after he took office, the company established DMAX Ltd., a joint venture with General Motors Corporation owned 60:40. Isuzu had concluded a basic agreement for a comprehensive alliance with GM in July 1971. In the fiscal year ended March 2000, however, it posted a net loss of ¥104.1 billion on consolidated net sales of ¥1,506.6 billion, and in December that year he handed the presidency to Yoshinori Ida.
