Background

Yoshinori Ida joined Isuzu Motors in April 1966, became General Manager of FS Planning in February 1990 and moved to assistant for the distribution division and FS planning in December 1992. He became a Director in January 1994, Managing Director in May 1996 and Senior Managing Director in April 1999, also serving as Representative Director and President of the Isuzu Central Research Institute from the time he became Senior Managing Director, and leaving that company's board in April 2000. He rose to the board neither from the plants nor from sales but from the division overseeing business planning.

Education: Keio University, Faculty of Law (1966)

Selection

In December 2000 he succeeded Takeshi Ino as President. The change came midway through the fiscal year rather than in June, when the shareholders' meeting is held; in the fiscal year ended March 2000, just before, the company posted a net loss of ¥104.1 billion on consolidated net sales of ¥1,506.6 billion, followed by a net loss of ¥66.7 billion in FY ended March 2001. The change entrusted stopping the losses to Ida, who had overseen distribution and planning since heading FS Planning.

Initiatives

In November 2002 the company spun off the Hokkaido plant as Isuzu Engine Manufacturing Hokkaido, and in May 2004 closed the Kawasaki plant and reorganized production into Fujisawa and Tochigi. In July that year it raised its voting stake in Isuzu Motors Co. (Thailand) to 70.9%, making it a consolidated subsidiary. In April 2006 it dissolved its capital alliance with GM, which sold all its shares to Mitsubishi Corporation, ITOCHU and Mizuho Corporate Bank. Consolidated net sales recovered from ¥1,349.4 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2003 to ¥1,662.9 billion in FY ended March 2007, and the bottom line swung from a ¥144.3 billion loss to a ¥92.3 billion profit.
