Background

He joined Renault in October 1996 and became Executive Vice President that December. In March 1999 Nissan concluded an alliance agreement with Renault including a capital investment, and that June he arrived as Director and Chief Operating Officer of Nissan Motor. He became President a year after arriving, in June 2000. The capital backing lay not with him but with the alliance partner: among major shareholders for the fiscal year ended March 2006, Renault was the largest with 44.33%.

Selection

In June 2000 he succeeded Yoshikazu Hanawa as President. In the fiscal year ended March 2000, the year before, consolidated net sales were ¥5,977.0 billion against a net loss of ¥684.3 billion, the third straight year of losses since FY ended March 1998. By the time he took office he had, as Chief Operating Officer, drawn up the Nissan Revival Plan and begun carrying it out. The appointment simply elevated the person responsible for the restructuring plan to President.

Initiatives

The company returned to profit in the fiscal year ended March 2001, and consolidated employees fell from 136,397 to 124,467. Vehicle production at the Murayama plant ended in March 2001, and in March 2002 Renault raised its stake in Nissan to 44.4%. After the turnaround the company turned to expansion: in 2003 Nissan North America's Canton plant was completed and Dongfeng Motor Co., Ltd. began operations. In 2016 Nissan took a stake in Mitsubishi Motors and brought it under its umbrella. Net sales grew from ¥6,089.6 billion in FY ended March 2001 to ¥11,720.0 billion in FY ended March 2017.
