Background

He was born on November 26, 1917 in Kureda Village, Kochi Prefecture (now Nankoku City). After finishing higher elementary school he worked at a small factory, Enomoto Seisakusho, and at his employer's urging studied at night at Waseda Technical School. He moved to Nippon Valve in 1936 and, after the war, in April 1946 founded Kashio Seisakusho in Mitaka, Tokyo. As the eldest of four brothers he handled financing and management, while development was led by his younger brother Toshio. As of the fiscal year ended March 1980 he was the fourth-largest shareholder with 4,504 thousand shares (5.35%).

Selection

When Casio Computer was established in June 1957, it was his father Shigeru Kashio who became President, with Tadao in a supporting role as Senior Managing Director. It was Tadao himself who had asked his father to take the presidency. Net sales grew from ¥5.7 million in the first fiscal year (ended March 1958) to ¥118 million in the third, and with monthly output expected to exceed 200 units, capital was doubled from ¥500,000 to ¥1 million in March 1960. The Tokyo Factory was completed in Higashiyamato, Tokyo that April, and the following month, May 1960, he became President.

Initiatives

The company launched an electronic desktop calculator in September 1965 and listed on the Second Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange in September 1970. In August 1972 it released the Casio Mini, with its display limited to six digits, at ¥12,800, opening up the market for personal calculators, and that same month moved to the TSE First Section. In November 1974 it entered the watch business with the Casiotron digital watch, and added the Casiotone electronic keyboard in January 1980. Net sales grew from ¥600 million in the fiscal year ended March 1966 to ¥210.3 billion in FY ended March 1985.
