Background

A career employee, he joined Advantest in 1984. He became an Executive Officer in June 2008 and, the following June, Representative Director, President and CEO. He was promoted straight from Executive Officer without first serving as a director, and was the second consecutive career-employee president after his predecessor Toshio Maruyama.

Selection

In June 2009 he succeeded Toshio Maruyama as President. In the fiscal year ended March 2009, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥76.7 billion, with an operating loss of ¥49.5 billion and a net loss of ¥74.9 billion; the company had just fallen into the red as the semiconductor market deteriorated after the Lehman shock. He was appointed in his 25th year with the company, just one year after becoming an Executive Officer.

Initiatives

In 2011 he acquired U.S.-based Verigy. The relationship with Nvidia built through Verigy later became the foothold for an effective monopoly in GPU testers. On the other hand, the company posted net losses for three straight years from the fiscal year ended March 2012 to FY ended March 2014, and in FY ended March 2014, his final year, recorded a pre-tax loss of ¥35.5 billion and a net loss of ¥35.5 billion.
