Background

Shin Eguchi was born in Osaka in 1963, graduated from Waseda University and worked at a management consulting firm before founding PC Works Ltd. in Fujisawa, Kanagawa Prefecture, in March 1998. Its stated business purposes at founding were consulting on management, operations and IT, systems integration and outsourcing. In practice it built information systems for large companies, starting out as an independent systems integrator. The company converted to a joint-stock company in June 2000 and moved its head office to Shinjuku, Tokyo, in March 2002.

Education: Waseda University

Selection

He founded the company himself in March 1998, so he had no predecessor. Annual revenue grew each time the office moved: ¥0.4 billion at Hatsudai in 1999, ¥1.3 billion at Yoyogi in 2001, ¥2.5 billion on the 17th floor of the Shinjuku NS Building in 2003, and ¥5.5 billion after expanding to the fifth floor of the same building in 2006. The company posted higher sales and profits for nine straight years from its founding without borrowing, and net sales reached ¥3.35 billion in the fiscal year ended February 2005. The official corporate history was an eight-line chronology listing only office locations and revenue.

Initiatives

In December 2006 he changed the company name from PC Works to BayCurrent Consulting. The new name proclaimed a firm handling everything from strategy formulation and business process reengineering to IT system implementation, maintenance and operation, and in hiring it valued aptitude over knowledge or experience. In May 2011 he brought in Kazumi Hagihira, former Japan co-head of the BTO practice at McKinsey & Company, and handed him the presidency ten months later in March 2012. In the fiscal year ended February 2012, just before, net sales were ¥10.1 billion against ordinary income of ¥480 million, a margin below 5%.
