Background
He founded JustSystems in Tokushima City, Tokushima Prefecture, in July 1979 and became Representative Director and President when it was incorporated in June 1981. He also became Representative Director and President of JustSystems Service in September 1990, and personally took on the posts of representative director or board director of a U.S. holding company in April 1995, a Shanghai subsidiary in January 2000, and North American and Canadian companies in March 2006. For many years he held both the domestic presidency and the top posts at overseas subsidiaries by himself.
Selection
He was the first President, with no predecessor. Hatsuko Ukigawa, Senior Managing Director at the founding in June 1981, became Director and Vice Chairman in June 2009. At the end of the fiscal year ended March 2009, Kazunori Ukigawa held 8,623,000 shares and Hatsuko Ukigawa 7,290,000. The two founders' continued shareholding appears to have enabled his long 28-year tenure.
Initiatives
In October 1982 he announced the Japanese language processing system KTIS (now ATOK), and in August 1985 launched the Japanese word processor Ichitaro. In October 1997 the company went public as an over-the-counter registered stock. It posted operating losses for four straight years from the fiscal year ended March 2006 to FY ended March 2009, with an operating loss of ¥3.9 billion on revenue of ¥14.6 billion in FY ended March 2008. In April 2009 it signed a capital and business alliance agreement with Keyence, and that June he handed the presidency to Tomoaki Fukura and became Representative Director and Chairman.
