Background
Born in Yamaguchi Prefecture in 1900, he graduated from the Faculty of Law at Tokyo Imperial University in March 1924. He became a Director in December 1943 and Managing Director in January 1946, then head of the Tokyo Branch in July 1949 and head of the Sales Headquarters in February 1952, and from December of that year oversaw fertilizer and the sales department. He became Senior Managing Director in March 1955 and from November 1959 also took charge of the industrial division. Among executives lined with engineers, he was a law graduate who handled sales from a base in Tokyo.
Selection
In November 1961 he became Representative Director and Executive Vice President stationed in Tokyo, and after 16 years as Executive Vice President became Representative Director and President in December 1977. In the same month, December 1977, Kanichi Nakayasu moved to Representative Director and Chairman, and four people including Hiroo Tawarada were lined up as Executive Vice Presidents. He was 77 when he took office. The Executive Vice President who had long handled sales appears to have been chosen to carry on a business that had finished winding down coal.
Initiatives
During his tenure Ube Industries had five divisions, cement, chemicals, petrochemicals, machinery and plants, each headed by a Senior Managing Director. The number of employees in the coal division had reached zero in March 1975, and Mizuno was on the side of carrying forward a business structure that had finished winding down the founding business. In October 1982, the year he stepped down, a 145,000 kW coal-fired in-house power plant was completed. It was a period in which Ube Industries' relationship with coal shifted from mining it to burning it.
