Background
In October 1984 he established Sushitaro Co. in Toyonaka, Osaka Prefecture, and became Representative Director. He also named the restaurants Sushitaro and opened the first one in Toyonaka. In August 1999 his company merged with another company of the same name, Sushitaro Co., whose Representative Director was his younger brother Yutaka Shimizu, with Yoshio Shimizu's company as the surviving entity. This brought together into one company a business that had been split between two companies under the same trade name.
Initiatives
In October 1991 he switched the store opening policy to mainly company-owned stores, opening the Ochiai store in Suma-ku, Kobe, the first with a round-trip conveyor belt. In December 1995 he set up a processing facility next to the Takarazuka Agura store, and in September 1996 began a uniform price of ¥100 per plate at the Takatsukasa store in Takarazuka, Hyogo Prefecture. In December 2000 he changed the company name to Akindo Sushiro and moved the head office to Settsu, Osaka Prefecture, integrating the processing facility and warehouse into the head office. The company opened stores in the Kanto region in September 2001 and the Chubu region in July 2002, and listed on the Second Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange in September 2003.
