Background
He joined Dentsu in April 1991, moved to Andersen Consulting (now Accenture) in February 1996 and to the Japanese arm of Roland Berger in April 2000, becoming its Representative Director in January 2005. He worked on corporate turnarounds as Managing Director of the Enterprise Turnaround Initiative Corporation of Japan from October 2009 and as Director and Executive Vice President of Japan Airlines from December 2010. After serving as Director and Senior Managing Executive Officer of World from June 2013, he was brought in as Representative Director and President of Akindo Sushiro in February 2015.
Selection
In March 2015 he succeeded Kenichi Toyosaki as Representative Director and President. A month earlier, in February 2015, he had become Representative Director and President of the operating company Akindo Sushiro, so he led both the holding company and the operating company at once. He was recruited from outside with a background in management consulting and corporate turnarounds, not promoted from within. In the FY ended September 2015, his first year, consolidated sales were ¥136.2 billion, operating income ¥6.9 billion and net income ¥3.8 billion.
Initiatives
During his tenure he personally took director posts at overseas subsidiaries, starting with Sushiro Korea in September 2015 and expanding to Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Thailand, China, Indonesia and Malaysia. At home, he also became Chairman of the Board of Kyotaru in April 2021. Consolidated sales grew 2.7 times from ¥136.2 billion in the FY ended September 2015 to ¥361.1 billion in the FY ended September 2024. Operating income halved from ¥22.9 billion in the FY ended September 2021 to ¥10.1 billion in the FY ended September 2022, then recovered to ¥23.4 billion in the FY ended September 2024.
