Background

He graduated from the Faculty of Law at Tokyo Imperial University in March 1939 and entered the Ministry of Commerce and Industry in April that year. He rose to Director-General of the Promotion Bureau in April 1961 and later served as Secretary General of the Overseas Economic Cooperation Fund. He joined Nitto Boseki as Managing Director in December 1966 and became Director and President the following month, January 1967. He had no experience on the textile shop floor, having spent 27 years in government and government-affiliated bodies.

Education: Tokyo Imperial University, Faculty of Law (now University of Tokyo, Faculty of Law) (1939)

Selection

In January 1967 he succeeded Eiichi Shimada as Director and President. In the FY ended April 1966, just before, the company had posted a net loss of ¥3.63 billion on sales of ¥33.0 billion and had just suspended its dividend. It was the first of the major cotton spinners to fall into the red, and he took office only a month after joining. With the structural slump in textiles a policy issue at the time, the appointment appears to have put his background promoting industry at the Ministry of International Trade and Industry to work on the turnaround.

Initiatives

He narrowed cotton spinning to high-grade combed yarn and withdrew from synthetic fibers, silk spinning and synthetic leather. In 1967 the company sold its subsidiaries Chuo Boseki and Shinyo Boseki, and in 1970 sold the Kainan Plant and built the Wakayama Plant. It built a glass fiber fabric plant in August 1969 and a plant for Solaton non-combustible acoustic ceiling boards in April 1971. Sales grew from ¥33.6 billion in the FY ended April 1967 to ¥91.7 billion in the FY ended April 1978. Along the way it posted an ordinary loss of ¥4.229 billion in the FY ended April 1976, but returned to profit the following year.
