Background

He joined Nissho Iwai in May 1970 and spent 42 years with the company until moving to Representative Director and Chairman in April 2012. He became Executive Officer in June 2001 and advanced to Director and Managing Executive Officer in April 2003 and Representative Director and Senior Managing Executive Officer in April 2004. After three years as a senior managing executive with representative authority, he became Representative Director, President and CEO in April 2007. It took five years and ten months from becoming an executive officer to the presidency.

Selection

In April 2007 he succeeded Akio Dobashi as Representative Director, President and CEO. In the fiscal year ended March 2007, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥5,218.1 billion and net income ¥58.7 billion, the second straight profitable year after a net loss of ¥412.4 billion in the FY ended March 2005. The change came right after the loss write-offs were completed, and the person chosen had overseen the three years since the integration as Representative Director and Senior Managing Executive Officer.

Initiatives

In the FY ended March 2008, his second year, consolidated net sales grew to ¥5,771.0 billion, operating income to ¥92.4 billion and net income to ¥62.6 billion. After the Lehman shock, in the FY ended March 2010, net sales fell to ¥3,844.4 billion and net income to ¥8.7 billion. Throughout his tenure he continued reducing interest-bearing debt and fusing the organizations of the former Nissho Iwai and the former Nichimen. In the FY ended March 2012, his final year, net sales were ¥4,494.2 billion and income before income taxes ¥58.5 billion, with a net loss of ¥3.6 billion.
