Background

He joined Nissho Iwai in April 1981. He became Executive Officer 34 years later, in April 2015, and Senior Managing Executive Officer the following April. One year and two months after that, in June 2017, he became Representative Director, President and CEO, with only two years and two months as an officer before the top job. After stepping down as president he served as Representative Director, Chairman and CEO, and from April 2025 as Representative Director and Chairman.

Education: University of Tokyo, Faculty of Law (1981)

Selection

In June 2017 he succeeded Yoji Sato as Representative Director, President and CEO. In the fiscal year ended March 2017, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥1,555.3 billion and net income ¥40.7 billion, with net sales having shrunk two years running from ¥1,809.7 billion in the FY ended March 2015. The appointment appears to have entrusted the task of restoring shrinking sales to someone with two years' experience as an executive officer.

Initiatives

After taking office he called for differentiation in non-resource fields, where results are less swayed by commodity prices. In the FY ended March 2019 consolidated net sales grew to ¥1,856.1 billion, income before income taxes to ¥94.9 billion and net income to ¥70.4 billion. Net income fell to ¥27.0 billion in the FY ended March 2021 as COVID-19 spread, but recovered in the FY ended March 2023 to net sales of ¥2,479.8 billion, income before income taxes of ¥155.0 billion and net income of ¥111.2 billion. In the FY ended March 2024, his final year, the company still secured net income of ¥100.7 billion.
