Background
He joined Nissho Iwai in April 1993. In August 2013 he became head of Sojitz Corporation of America and its Americas energy and metals division, handling resource businesses in the Americas. He moved to Executive Officer and head of the chemicals division in April 2021 and Executive Officer in charge of corporate planning in April 2023, spending the year just before the presidency in corporate planning. It took three years from becoming an executive officer to the presidency.
Selection
In April 2024 he succeeded Masayoshi Fujimoto as President and COO, becoming Representative Director, President and COO that June. His predecessor, who moved to chairman, kept the CEO role for one year, and in April 2025 his title became Representative Director, President and CEO. In the fiscal year ended March 2024, the year before he took office, consolidated revenue was ¥2,414.6 billion, income before income taxes ¥125.5 billion and net income ¥100.7 billion.
Initiatives
He set a policy of linking scattered businesses into lines and planes and grouping them into "clusters" built around existing businesses. The idea is to expand around the edges of existing businesses rather than leaping into unrelated new fields. In the FY ended March 2025 consolidated revenue was ¥2,509.7 billion, income before income taxes ¥135.3 billion and net income ¥110.6 billion, and in the FY ended March 2026 revenue was ¥2,757.4 billion and net income ¥103.6 billion. The stock trades at a PBR of only 0.77 times (as of June 30, 2025), which the company lists as a management issue.
