Selection

In September 1961 he was promoted from Executive Vice President following the death of Kiyoshi Shibata. In February of that year Kurauto Uchita, head of sales and advertising, and Kozaburo Nonoyama, head of accounting, had just been promoted to Managing Director while keeping those posts, leaving Matsuyama as the sole executive vice president. The Sapporo trademark revived in 1957 had caught on, and non-consolidated net sales grew from ¥46.0 billion in the FY ended December 1960 to ¥65.2 billion in the FY ended December 1961. The change put a president from the brewing side at the top.

Initiatives

In April 1963 the company launched Sapporo Giants, and in January 1964 changed its name from Nippon Breweries to Sapporo Breweries, matching the corporate name to its flagship brand. That December it signed an exclusive agreement for Japan with Guinness of the U.K. and set up Sapporo Guinness, and a capital increase in January 1965 brought capital to ¥10.08 billion. Non-consolidated net sales grew from ¥65.2 billion in the FY ended December 1961 to ¥90.8 billion in the FY ended December 1966, but net income fell from ¥2.08 billion to ¥1.83 billion. He became Chairman in February 1967.
