Background

He graduated from the Faculty of Economics of Tokyo Imperial University in March 1925 and joined Dai Nippon Brewery that April. In May 1946 he was seconded to Niihama Kagaku Kogyo as general manager of administration, and when Nippon Breweries was launched in September 1949 he became general manager of accounting. He advanced to councillor in September 1953, Director and general manager of accounting in February 1957, Managing Director and general manager of accounting in February 1961, and Senior Managing Director in February 1963. A head-office administrator who never ran a plant or branch, he headed accounting for 14 years.

Education: Tokyo Imperial University, Faculty of Economics (1925)

Selection

In February 1967 he succeeded Mosuke Matsuyama as President, with Matsuyama moving to Chairman. On the same day Kurauto Uchita became Executive Vice President and Hideo Takei Senior Managing Director in charge of sales, so Nonoyama, from accounting, rose ahead of the two sales men. In the previous fiscal year, ended December 1966, non-consolidated net sales were ¥90.8 billion and net income ¥1.83 billion; while sales grew 40% in five years, profit fell below the ¥2.08 billion of the FY ended December 1961. The company's industry share in 1967 was 25.01%.

Initiatives

In June 1967 the company launched Sapporo Five Star, and in April 1968 completed the Nagoya plant, started production at the North Kanto plant and broke ground on a new Sendai plant. Merger talks with Asahi Breweries had collapsed three times, in spring 1963, late 1965 and spring 1966, so he chose to grow through its own capacity expansion. Raising share by 1% every year to secure more than 30% of the market by 1976, the company's centenary, was the goal President Nonoyama set, but domestic share fell below 25% in December 1968. In February 1971 he stepped back to Chairman, and Executive Vice President Kurauto Uchita succeeded him.
