Background

He entered the Ministry of International Trade and Industry in April 1972, becoming Director-General of the Trade and Economic Cooperation Bureau in July 2002, Director-General of the Trade Policy Bureau in June 2004 and Vice-Minister for International Affairs in July 2006. After retiring, he served as an adviser to Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance in November 2007 and joined INPEX Holdings as Executive Vice President and Executive Officer in August 2009.

Selection

In June 2010 he succeeded Naoki Kuroda as President, a promotion ten months after joining as Executive Vice President and Executive Officer the previous August. The largest shareholder was the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, with an 18.94% stake as of the fiscal year ended March 2011. In the fiscal year ended March 2010, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥840.4 billion and ordinary profit ¥442.0 billion, down from ¥1,076.1 billion and ¥616.2 billion in FY ended March 2009.

Initiatives

In 2012 the company made the final investment decision on the Ichthys LNG project, with a total cost of US$34 billion. In 2015 it acquired an interest in the Abu Dhabi onshore oil fields (ADCO) under a 40-year contract. Consolidated net sales peaked at ¥1,334.6 billion in FY ended March 2014 and fell to ¥1,009.5 billion with net income of ¥16.7 billion in FY ended March 2016. The workforce grew from 1,870 in the year before he took office to 3,189 in FY ended March 2018.
