Background

He entered the Ministry of International Trade and Industry in April 1963 and served as Commissioner of the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy in June 1992. In August 1995 he moved to Sumitomo Corporation as an adviser, becoming Managing Director in June 1996 and Representative Director and Executive Vice President in April 2001. He joined INPEX Corporation as Representative Director and Executive Vice President in September 2004 and became its Representative Director and President in June 2005. He was an outsider whose career lay in energy administration and trading rather than oil field operations. The largest shareholder was the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, with an 18.94% stake in the fiscal year ended March 2011.

Selection

In April 2006 he became the first President of the joint holding company formed by the business integration of INPEX and Teikoku Oil. Before the integration, INPEX's net sales had grown from ¥478.5 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2005 to ¥704.2 billion in FY ended March 2006, and net income from ¥76.4 billion to ¥103.4 billion. Kuroda, who had been President of INPEX before the integration, went on to lead the holding company.

Initiatives

In the first year after integration, FY ended March 2007, the company posted net sales of ¥969.7 billion and operating profit of ¥559.1 billion, and the workforce rose from 407 the previous year to 1,672. In October 2008 the holding company absorbed its two operating companies and changed its name to INPEX Corporation. Net sales, ¥1,202.9 billion in FY ended March 2008, shrank to ¥840.4 billion in FY ended March 2010, and net income from ¥173.2 billion to ¥107.2 billion.
