Background

Born in Kyoto in 1901, he graduated from the Faculty of Engineering of Kyoto Imperial University in 1926. He became Executive Vice President of Kansai Electric Power in November 1959 and in December 1960 moved to Electric Power Development Company, a national policy company, as vice president. He had never worked at Tohoku Electric Power, and was brought in as President after managing both a power company and the power development company.

Education: Kyoto Imperial University, Faculty of Engineering (now Kyoto University, Faculty of Engineering) (1926)

Selection

He became President of Tohoku Electric Power in December 1962. The company had listed on the First Section of the Osaka Securities Exchange in October 1961, the year before, so the change came just after it broadened its listings. Almost all the directors in the same executive listing were career employees who had joined at Tohoku Electric's launch in 1951, making a President from outside an exception. He took office right after two years as vice president of Electric Power Development.

Initiatives

During his tenure, in February 1968, the company opened a Nuclear Power Development Promotion Headquarters, headed by Managing Director Norio Suzuki. In the same February 1968 he appointed Tomihiko Nakagawa head of the President's Office, swapping responsibility for the President's Office and the Planning Office. In November 1969 he handed the presidency to Tsuyoshi Wakabayashi, whom he had raised to Executive Vice President in January 1966, and became Chairman.
