From June 2012 he served as Director, Managing Executive Officer and head of the Corporate Strategy and Planning Department, also heading the Business Reform Office from July 2013. In June 2014, as Representative Director and Executive Vice President, he took charge of technology, devices and information strategy, reaching the presidency after moving from corporate sales through personnel, corporate planning and technology.

Education: Iwate University, Faculty of Engineering, Information Engineering

Selection

In June 2016 he succeeded Kaoru Kato as President. On November 27 of the previous year, 2015, DOCOMO had decided to withdraw from the smartphone television broadcasting service NOTTV, whose operating subsidiary mmbi had posted cumulative losses of nearly ¥90.0 billion over the three years through the fiscal year ended March 2015. Meanwhile subscribers stood at 68.49 million at the end of September 2015, still the largest in Japan. The change appears to have handed him both the cleanup of a new business and the question of how to make use of the company's customer base.

Initiatives

The price cut of 20% to 40% roughly matched the rates expected if Rakuten entered the market. It was decided at the end of 2018, ahead of an urgent proposal from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications and Rakuten's entry, as a customer return of up to ¥400.0 billion. What the company prioritized in exchange for the return was its membership base: it set a goal of growing d POINT CLUB from about 65 million members to 78 million by fiscal 2021, and eventually to 100 million. On September 29, 2020, parent NTT, which held about 66%, announced it would make the company a wholly owned subsidiary through a tender offer. The total purchase price of about ¥4.3 trillion was the largest ever for a tender offer in Japan.
