Background
Born in 1948 in Hyogo Prefecture, he completed graduate school at Osaka University in 1973 and joined Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Public Corporation. He became a Director of NTT West in June 2001 and its Managing Director and head of the Solutions Sales Headquarters in June 2002. In June 2004 he moved to Nippon Telegraph and Telephone as Representative Director and Executive Vice President. He came to DOCOMO in June 2007 and spent a year as Representative Director, Executive Vice President and head of the Corporate Sales Headquarters before becoming President.
Selection
In June 2008 he succeeded Masao Nakamura as President. Mobile phone subscriptions had passed 100 million and, apart from the second-handset and corporate markets, were saturated. Since number portability began in October 2006, the company had also continued to trail in net additions.
Initiatives
In July 2008 the company absorbed the eight regional DOCOMO companies, horizontally integrating into a single company the regional division of labor that had lasted nearly 17 years since its founding in November 1991. The consolidation of regional sales companies pursued by his predecessor Masao Nakamura had preceded this unification. In December 2010 it launched high-speed LTE service ahead of its rivals. When the iPhone 5, released in September 2012, supported LTE, however, KDDI and SoftBank also stepped up base station investment, and the early-mover advantage faded.
