Background
He joined Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Public Corporation in July 1969 and moved to NTT DOCOMO as a Director and head of the Accounting Department in June 1998. That company had been spun off from NTT in 1992, taking over its mobile communications business. He became a Director and head of the Finance Department in January 1999, Managing Director and head of the Finance Department in June that year, Managing Director and head of the MM Business Headquarters in June 2001, and Representative Director and Executive Vice President for the Sales Headquarters in June 2002, starting from finance and passing through business divisions and sales.
Selection
In June 2004 he succeeded Keiji Tachikawa, who had completed three two-year terms, as President. His predecessor's overseas investments had stalled, and the company had posted an ¥812.9 billion write-down of affiliated company shares in the fiscal year ended March 2002. Changes in the capital structure of its investees had cost it influence over KPN Mobile and Taiwan's KG Telecom, and the sale of AT&T Wireless in the US, where it had been the largest shareholder, had been decided. FOMA, the third-generation service launched in October 2001, languished for more than two years owing to limited coverage and insufficient technical development, and from October 2003 it trailed au in net additions for six straight months. The change came with the task of breaking out of a follower position.
Initiatives
In fiscal 2004 the company sold its AT&T Wireless shares, booking a gain of ¥501.8 billion. It recorded an impairment of about ¥60.4 billion on its PHS business at the end of fiscal 2004 and stopped accepting new PHS subscriptions at the end of April 2005. In Japan it reviewed sales incentives, developed a new corporate brand and consolidated its regional sales companies. In April 2008 it announced the "New DOCOMO Commitment," emphasizing existing customers, and changed its logo. After number portability began in October 2006, however, it continued to trail in net additions.
