Background

In February 1988 he founded Hikari Tsushin, Inc. to sell and lease office equipment and telephones, and became its first President. In June 1991 he also founded Hikari Power and served as its President. He became Chief Executive Officer in November 2000 and Representative Director and Chairman in June 2003. Even in the fiscal year ended March 2006, after he stepped down, the largest shareholder was he himself with 33.5%, followed by Hikari Power with 23.36%, the two together holding a majority.

Education: Sugamo High School (1983)
Education: Nihon University, Faculty of Economics (withdrew)

Selection

He became President at the company's founding, with no predecessor. The purpose at founding was selling and leasing office equipment and telephones, not acting as an agent for telecommunications services. The company added copiers and fax machines to its products in April 1990 and computers and peripherals in November 1991, and began selling international telephone service in earnest in December 1992 and mobile phone service lines in June 1993. Within five years of its founding it had changed the products it handled.

Initiatives

With the introduction of outright sales of mobile phone handsets in April 1994, the company entered handset sales, and in May 1995 it began selling business phones in earnest. In February 1996 it registered its shares with the Japan Securities Dealers Association, and by May 1999 its mobile phone stores numbered 1,500 nationwide. Consolidated revenue for the fiscal year ended August 2000 was ¥316.6 billion. The FY ended March 2002 showed revenue of ¥71.0 billion and a net loss of ¥16.1 billion, and the FY ended March 2003 revenue of ¥124.1 billion and a net loss of ¥7.9 billion, so losses remained until he stepped down.
