Background

Hiroshi Sato was born in Sagamihara, Kanagawa Prefecture, in August 1970, completed a master's program at the Graduate School of Science and Engineering of Tokyo Institute of Technology in March 1995 and joined McKinsey & Company, Inc. Japan. He moved to BOOKOFF CORPORATION in August 1997 and the following month, at 27, became a Director in charge of the corporate strategy office. From April 2003 he also served as Representative Director of the subsidiary BOOKOFF Media, and in April 2007 became Executive Officer in charge of corporate strategy.

Selection

On June 19, 2007, founder Takashi Sakamoto, Representative Director, Chairman and CEO, resigned from the board. After the shareholders' meeting on June 23, President Mayumi Hashimoto gave up her representative authority and moved to Chairman, and Sato, at 36, became Representative Director, President and head of the strategy division. The company disclosed its reason as "to renew the management structure and restore the trust of stakeholders by further expanding market share and strengthening compliance," and on June 29 filed amended reports for its 13th to 15th fiscal periods.

Initiatives

In November 2007, five months after he took office, the company revised down its interim and full-year forecasts and cut the monthly pay of the three full-time directors, the President, Chairman and Senior Managing Director, by 30%. Consolidated revenue rose from ¥50.4 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2008 to ¥73.3 billion in the FY ended March 2011, but net income fell from ¥1.04 billion to ¥0.56 billion. On August 30, 2011, he offered to resign effective September 1 for personal reasons, the board accepted, and Representative Director and Senior Managing Director Nobuyuki Matsushita succeeded him.
