Background

Mayumi Hashimoto was born in Ono, Fukui Prefecture, in March 1949. After marrying at 23 she was a full-time homemaker for 18 years, then answered a newspaper flyer reading "BOOKOFF store No. 1: opening staff wanted" and started work as a part-timer in April 1990. She was put in charge of the second store, which opened in January 1991, but when Takashi Sakamoto visited at the end of that year he told her, "Let's close this store down"; she rebuilt the staff and sales and kept it open. She became a Director in August 1994 and a Managing Director in June 2003.

Selection

In February 2006, on the stage of a store meeting, Takashi Sakamoto declared, "The next President is Hashimoto." On May 16 the board tentatively decided that after the ordinary general meeting of shareholders in June, Sakamoto would become Representative Director and Chairman (CEO) and Hashimoto Representative Director and President (COO), citing the aim of "further accelerating management decision-making and business execution." Her rise from part-timer to President drew attention. It appears to have been an arrangement in which the founder kept ultimate responsibility while entrusting business execution to Hashimoto, who knew the stores.

Initiatives

Her tenure ended after one year. When internal problems came to light in 2007, she organized an investigation committee to determine the causes and devise measures to prevent recurrence. After the shareholders' meeting on June 23, she moved to Chairman without representative authority and head of the sales division, and Hiroshi Sato became President. On June 29 the company filed amended reports for its 13th to 15th fiscal periods. After serving as senior adviser and in other roles, she resigned as a director effective September 30, 2018, the month before the move to a holding company. She cited the milestone of the holding company transition and caring for her father in Fukui as her reasons.
