Background
Born in Kagawa in 1913, he graduated from Kobe University of Commerce in March 1937 and joined Nippon Express by way of Kokusai Tsuun in October that year. After serving as general manager of the administration department, he became head of the Kanto regional office in January 1961, a director (riji) in April that year and head of the marine transport division in June 1962. In March 1964 he became head of the Marine Transport Headquarters as managing director (jomu riji), and joined the board in November that year. Until he reached the executive ranks, his work centered on marine transport.
Selection
He became Representative Director and President in January 1968, succeeding Toshiyuki Fukushima. He took the post three years and two months after becoming a Director in November 1964, having risen two steps within a year along the way, to Managing Director in April 1966 and Senior Managing Director in November that year. Also in January 1968, Seitaro Terakado became Representative Director and Executive Vice President. Terakado had become Director, Managing Director and Senior Managing Director in exactly the same months as Sawamura, and from there the two split into President and Executive Vice President.
Initiatives
Revenue grew 1.8-fold in five years, from ¥271.6 billion in the fiscal year ended March 1971 to ¥478.8 billion in the FY ended March 1976. Ordinary profit, by contrast, went from only ¥7.8 billion to ¥8.2 billion over the same period, dipping to ¥6.5 billion in the FY ended March 1975. Scale grew but margins did not, and net income stayed in the ¥4 billion range across all six years.
