Background

Born in Niigata in 1913, he graduated from the Faculty of Law of Tokyo Imperial University in March 1938. He became Vice-Minister of Transport in June 1964 and left that post in June 1965. He joined Nippon Express in November 1968, arriving as Senior Managing Director. Until he was promoted to Representative Director and Executive Vice President in February 1972, the only positions he held at the company were Senior Managing Director and Executive Vice President.

Selection

He became Representative Director and President in June 1976, with his predecessor Takayoshi Sawamura moving to Chairman. He took the post seven years and seven months after joining; Kaisuke Akagi, who was Representative Director and Executive Vice President at the same time, was a career employee who had joined in October 1937 by way of Kokusai Tsuun. In the year before his appointment, the fiscal year ended March 1976, revenue was ¥478.8 billion and ordinary profit ¥8.2 billion, with revenue down from ¥479.8 billion in the FY ended March 1975.

Initiatives

In 1977 the company launched the Pelican home delivery service. This business was spun off into JP Express in April 2009 and came to an end in 2010 after 33 years. Overseas, it established Nippon Express Netherlands in June 1977 and Nippon Express Hong Kong in June 1979, extending its local subsidiaries, until then only in the United States, to Europe and Asia. Revenue grew from ¥478.8 billion in the fiscal year ended March 1976 to ¥744.4 billion in the FY ended March 1983, and ordinary profit from ¥8.2 billion to ¥14.1 billion.
