Background
Born in Tokyo in 1895, he graduated from the Faculty of Law of Hosei University in 1916. After working at Naikoku Tsuun, Kokusai Tsuun and Yokohama Kakueki Godo Unso, he joined Nippon Express when it was founded in October 1937. He became a director (riji) in February 1946, Managing Director in December 1949 and Senior Managing Director in April 1954, and was appointed Executive Vice President in June 1955. All of his experience before reaching the executive ranks was gained inside the rail-linked freight forwarding business.
Selection
He became Representative Director and President in May 1960, with his predecessor Tomio Kanamaru moving to Representative Director and Chairman that same month. In the same month Yasushi Obata became Executive Vice President, and Yukito Ikeda, Takeo Nishimura and Torao Irie were simultaneously promoted to Senior Managing Director, reshuffling the senior lineup all at once. Fukushima moved up after nearly five years as Executive Vice President from June 1955.
Initiatives
During his tenure, in July 1962, the company established Nippon Express U.S.A., the forerunner of today's NX America and the first overseas local subsidiary to appear in the corporate history section of its annual securities report. The next local subsidiary, in the Netherlands, was not established until 15 years later, in June 1977, so in this period the company's overseas presence remained limited to the United States.
