Background
Born in Gifu Prefecture in 1911, he graduated from Tokyo University of Commerce in March 1935 and joined Osaka Shosen Kaisha that month. He became Deputy General Manager of General Affairs in May 1957, chief representative in London in May 1959 and General Manager of Accounting in June 1963. He was an administrator who combined accounting with overseas postings.
Selection
In May 1973 he became Representative Director and President, succeeding Jiro Gonda, after just one year as Executive Vice President and six years counting from Managing Director. In the same month of May 1973, Shoichi Shimada, who had moved from Mitsui & Co. to Mitsui Senpaku, became Representative Director and Executive Vice President, alongside Shinoda from Osaka Shosen. Hisao Fukuda, President two generations earlier, remained as Chairman.
Initiatives
During his tenure non-consolidated revenue more than doubled in three years, from ¥155.1 billion in the fiscal year ended March 1973 to ¥333.7 billion in the fiscal year ended March 1976. Ordinary profit rose to ¥10.8 billion in the fiscal year ended March 1974 and ¥17.8 billion in the fiscal year ended March 1975, then turned to a loss of ¥0.97 billion in the fiscal year ended March 1976. Profit reversed in the very year revenue peaked. In June 1976 he stepped back to Representative Director and Chairman and handed the presidency to Norihiko Nagai from Mitsui Senpaku.
