Background

Born in Tokushima Prefecture in 1905, he graduated from the vocational division of Tokyo University of Commerce in March 1925 and joined Osaka Shosen Kaisha in April that year. He became head of the Tokyo branch in April 1953 and a Director the following May, and from June 1955 also handled the duties of General Manager of Sales and of the Passenger Department. He became Senior Managing Director in November 1957 and Executive Vice President in May 1959, and after the April 1964 merger served as Executive Vice President of Mitsui O.S.K. Lines. A sales man, he worked at Osaka Shosen alone from joining until reaching the board.

Education: Tokyo University of Commerce, Professional Course (now Hitotsubashi University) (1925)

Selection

In May 1967 he became Representative Director and President, succeeding Koji Shindo. Three years after the merger, Shindo, from Mitsui Senpaku, moved to Representative Director and Chairman, and Fukuda, Executive Vice President for eight years, took over. Of the four Executive Vice Presidents at the company's launch, Fukuda had been the earliest to join Osaka Shosen's board, in May 1953; Tatsuro Kafuku, also from Osaka Shosen, had joined its board in May 1959, and Takashi Usui, from Mitsui Senpaku, in January 1950.

Initiatives

In May 1967, the same month he became President, Yoshio Shinoda from Osaka Shosen and Masao Takeda from Mitsui Senpaku were promoted to Managing Director. Shoichi Shimada and Tomoyuki Yamada followed in May 1968, bringing onto the board the generation that had been department heads at the time of the merger. Non-consolidated revenue rose from ¥149.5 billion in the fiscal year ended March 1971 to ¥164.0 billion in the fiscal year ended March 1972, while ordinary profit moved from ¥13.5 billion to ¥12.2 billion. In May 1972 he stepped back to Representative Director and Chairman and handed the presidency to Jiro Gonda.
