Background

Born in Kyoto Prefecture in 1915, he graduated from Tokyo University of Commerce in March 1939 and joined Mitsui & Co. that month. He served as Deputy General Manager of the Liner Department at Mitsui Senpaku from December 1960, and with the April 1964 merger moved to Mitsui O.S.K. Lines as head of the Nagoya branch. He became General Manager of General Affairs in June 1967, a Director in May 1968, Managing Director in May 1971 and Representative Director and Senior Managing Director in November 1973. He was a Mitsui Senpaku-lineage executive who had worked in liners and general affairs.

Selection

In June 1976 he became Representative Director and President, succeeding Yoshio Shinoda. In the previous fiscal year, ended March 1976, the company had an ordinary loss of ¥0.97 billion, swinging into the red in a year when revenue rose to ¥333.7 billion. Shinoda moved to Representative Director and Chairman, and the presidency passed from Shinoda, from Osaka Shosen, to Nagai, from Mitsui Senpaku. The vice presidents also changed in the same month of June 1976, with Ichiro Maeda from Osaka Shosen and Masakatsu Tajiri, who had come from Mitsui & Co., becoming Representative Directors and Executive Vice Presidents.

Initiatives

In June 1977 he also became Chairman of the Japanese Shipowners' Association. Non-consolidated ordinary profit went from a loss of ¥0.97 billion in the year before he took office to thin profits of ¥4.076 billion in the fiscal year ended March 1978 and ¥1.525 billion in the fiscal year ended March 1979, recovering to ¥13.721 billion in the fiscal year ended March 1980. Revenue also rose from ¥320.5 billion in the fiscal year ended March 1979 to ¥416.8 billion in the fiscal year ended March 1980. In the 1980 edition's board list, Nagai appears as Chairman and Shizuo Kondo as President, having taken over the presidency.
