Background

Born in 1902, he graduated from Otaru Higher Commercial School in March 1925 and joined the shipping department of Mitsui & Co. in April that year. He transferred to Mitsui Senpaku when it was established in December 1942, and after serving as head of the Planning Section and General Manager of Operations became Representative Director and Managing Director in December 1946, Senior Managing Director in May 1956 and Representative Director and President in May 1960. He had worked consistently inside Mitsui Senpaku, spun off from Mitsui & Co.'s shipping department, from the day he joined.

Education: Otaru Higher Commercial School (now Otaru University of Commerce) (1925)

Selection

In April 1964 he became President of Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, formed by the merger of Osaka Shosen Kaisha and Mitsui Senpaku. At the time of the merger he had been Representative Director and President of Mitsui Senpaku for four years. Toshio Okada, President of Osaka Shosen, became Chairman of Mitsui O.S.K. Lines in the same April. Rather than having the surviving company's President simply become President of the new company, the launch appointments divided the two Presidents between the posts of President and Chairman.

Initiatives

At the launch there were six Representative Directors: Chairman Toshio Okada, President Shindo and four Executive Vice Presidents. The vice presidents were split two and two, Hisao Fukuda and Tatsuro Kafuku from Osaka Shosen, and Takashi Usui and Eiichi Yasuda, who had moved from Mitsui & Co.'s shipping department to Mitsui Senpaku. The Senior Managing Directors likewise included Bunpei Ito from Osaka Shosen and Kyunosuke Suzuki from Mitsui Senpaku. In May 1967 he stepped back to Representative Director and Chairman and handed the presidency to Hisao Fukuda from Osaka Shosen. His three years passed with executives from the two lineages lined up in equal numbers.
