Background
Born in Kochi Prefecture in 1903, he graduated from the Faculty of Engineering at Tokyo Imperial University in March 1928 and joined Shonan Electric Railway in June 1939. At Keikyu he became a Director in June 1948, Managing Director in November 1955 and Senior Managing Director in November 1959. It took him 21 years from joining the board to become President, nine of them as Senior Managing Director and a year and a half as Executive Vice President. He was a President drawn from an executive with an engineering education.
Selection
In November 1969 he became President, succeeding Haruo Sato. Whereas Sato had been brought in from outside after the South Manchuria Railway and Maruzen Hodo, Koichi Nakagawa was a company man going back to Shonan Electric Railway and had been Executive Vice President since May 1968. In the fiscal year ended March 1969, the year before he took office, revenue was ¥17.5 billion and net income ¥0.9 billion. The presidency, handed to an outsider, returned in-house after five and a half years.
Initiatives
Revenue, ¥17.5 billion in the year before he took office, reached ¥42.5 billion in the fiscal year ended March 1975, the last year-end he saw as President, with ordinary profit of ¥2.6 billion and net income of ¥1.6 billion. Revenue grew 2.4 times in five and a half years. In September 1970, while in office, he also became President of Keihin Department Store. In May 1975 he moved to Chairman and handed the presidency to Tsunenori Katagiri.
