Background
Born in Nagano Prefecture in 1909, he graduated from the higher commercial course of Yokohama Senmon Gakko in March 1934. After Shonan Electric Railway, he became a Director of Keikyu in November 1958, Managing Director in November 1961 and Senior Managing Director in November 1965. He became Executive Vice President in November 1969 and served five and a half years in that post before becoming President, 16 and a half years after joining the board.
Selection
In May 1975 he became President, succeeding Koichi Nakagawa, who moved to Chairman. Executive Vice President since November 1969, he was the most senior, having served longer than Tamotsu Hinohara, who became Executive Vice President in November 1973. In the fiscal year ended March 1975, the year before he took office, revenue was ¥42.5 billion, ordinary profit ¥2.6 billion and net income ¥1.6 billion. It was a succession in line with the ranking of the vice presidents.
Initiatives
Revenue, ¥42.5 billion in the year before he took office, reached ¥73.9 billion in the fiscal year ended March 1981, the last year-end he saw as President. Ordinary profit, however, fell from ¥2.6 billion to ¥0.9 billion, and net income stayed around ¥1.6 billion. While revenue grew 1.7 times, profit did not grow. In the fiscal year ended March 1975, revenue broke down as railway 42%, ancillary businesses 40% and motor vehicles 19%, with non-railway businesses accounting for more than half.
