Background

He graduated from Tokyo University of Commerce in 1938, joined Mitsui Gomei Kaisha and moved to Mitsui Fudosan in May 1949. He became Deputy General Manager of the Business Department in December 1959, also became a Director of Daiichi Kowan Kaihatsu in February 1960, and was appointed General Manager of the Waterfront Business Department in November 1961. From September 1962 he concurrently served as Managing Director of Mitsui Kowan Kaihatsu, and he became a Director in May 1963. He was a waterfront specialist who had run on the ground the land reclamation that Hideo Edo started.

Education: Tokyo University of Commerce (now Hitotsubashi University) (1938)

Selection

He became Representative Director and President in May 1974, with Hideo Edo moving to Representative Director and Chairman. He had become Managing Director in November 1967 and Representative Director and Senior Managing Director in November 1969, and from May 1971 also served as Executive Vice President of Mitsui Toshi Kaihatsu. In the same month of May 1974, Takehiko Nakai and Yoichi Nakai were both promoted to Representative Director and Senior Managing Director, making it a reshuffle of the hierarchy. In the half year to September 1974, six months after he took office, interest payments exceeded ¥10 billion against ordinary profit of ¥4.2 billion.

Initiatives

In October 1974, five months into his tenure, the company set up Mitsui Home with Mitsui & Co. and Mitsui Norin, and absorbed Mitsui Kowan Kaihatsu to establish Mitsui Fudosan Construction. It was a choice to borrow other companies' capital and technology in fields where it was weak, made after studying the methods of the major prefab builder Misawa Homes. In May 1980 it launched LETS, a joint development system that built on landowners' land and exchanged floor space at equal value, capturing development opportunities without holding land. In April 1981 it opened LaLaport Funabashi.
