Background

He joined Salomon Brothers Asia in April 1987, moved to Goldman Sachs in April 1990, and became a general partner of the group in November 1994. In April 1999 he founded Monex Securities as a joint venture with Sony and became its Representative Director. A founder who came up through foreign securities houses and went on to lead the company he started, he held 7,582,000 shares of Monex Group as of the end of March 2023.

Education: University of Tokyo, Faculty of Law

Selection

In March 2004, Monex Securities and Nikko Beans Securities reached a basic agreement to set up a joint holding company; after approval at both companies' June shareholders' meetings, the holding company Monex Beans Holdings was launched through a share transfer in August. It listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Mothers market at the same time. Matsumoto moved from Representative Director of Monex Securities to Representative Director and President of the holding company, and from May 2005 also served as President of Monex Beans Securities, formed by the merger of the two brokers. There was no predecessor; the founder simply carried on running the combined business.

Initiatives

He filled the gap in scale by buying it. He made ORIX Securities a wholly owned subsidiary through a share exchange in January 2010 and did the same with the US-based TradeStation Group in June 2011, and in August 2012 he acquired the securities subsidiary of Sony, an original investor in the company. In June 2013 the company moved to a committee-based governance structure and his title became Representative Executive Officer and President. In April 2018 he acquired all shares of Coincheck, which had suffered the theft of NEM crypto assets, taking the group into the crypto asset exchange business. In June 2023 he handed the presidency to Yuko Seimei.
