Background

He joined Sanrio in January 2014. He became Executive Officer in charge of the Planning and Sales Division in June 2015, a Director in June 2016 and Senior Managing Director in June 2017, becoming President six and a half years after joining. Though a member of the founding family, his family's shareholding was not large. In the fiscal year ended March 2015 the largest shareholder was SEGA SAMMY HOLDINGS with 10.6%, while Shintaro Tsuji ranked eighth with 2.1% and Tomoko Tsuji ninth with 1.9%.

Selection

In July 2020 he succeeded Shintaro Tsuji as President. Since the company's founding in 1960 the founder had been its only President, making this the first change at the top in 60 years. In the fiscal year ended March 2020, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥55.2 billion and operating profit ¥2.1 billion, with sales having declined for five straight years from ¥74.5 billion in the FY ended March 2015. European segment sales had fallen from ¥14.9 billion in the FY ended March 2010 to ¥1.7 billion in the FY ended March 2019, and North America from ¥11.8 billion in the FY ended March 2013 to ¥2.6 billion; both had posted segment losses since the FY ended March 2017.

Initiatives

In his first year, the fiscal year ended March 2021, consolidated net sales were ¥41.0 billion, with an operating loss of ¥3.3 billion and a net loss of ¥3.9 billion. Consolidated operating profit then grew to ¥13.2 billion in the FY ended March 2023 and ¥77.9 billion in the FY ended March 2026, when consolidated net sales reached ¥194.1 billion. North America recovered to segment sales of ¥27.5 billion and operating profit of ¥8.9 billion in the FY ended March 2025. In April 2022 the company moved to the Prime Market under the TSE's market restructuring.
