Background
He served as President and CEO of ITOCHU International from April 2007 and Representative Director and Executive Vice President of JAMCO from June 2012. In April 2016 he became Senior Managing Executive Officer and President of the ICT & Financial Business Company, and Director and Senior Managing Executive Officer in June of that year. After long running overseas subsidiaries and affiliates, he returned to the core of the parent company.
Selection
In April 2018 he succeeded Masahiro Okafuji as President and COO. Okafuji moved to Chairman and CEO in the same month, separating the CEO and COO roles. In the fiscal year ended March 2018, the year before he took office, consolidated revenue was ¥5,510.0 billion and net income ¥400.3 billion, up from ¥352.2 billion the previous year. The division of labor appears to have had the Chairman and CEO holding authority over investments while the President and COO ran day-to-day operations.
Initiatives
In January 2019 the company launched a hostile tender offer for Descente; when it succeeded in March its stake rose to 40%, and Descente's management was replaced at the June shareholders' meeting. In the fiscal year ended March 2019 it booked ¥143.3 billion in impairment losses, partly due to the slump in CITIC shares. Through a tender offer starting in July 2020 it made FamilyMart a wholly owned subsidiary, and FamilyMart was delisted on November 12. In June 2020 Itochu overtook Mitsubishi Corporation in market capitalization to become the top trading company.
