Background
He joined the company in April 1972 and built his career in the information industry. He became head of the Information Industry Division in March 2000, and in April 2002, as Managing Executive Officer, took charge of corporate planning, finance, accounting and credit control, also serving as Chief Information Officer. He became Managing Director in June 2003 and Senior Managing Director in April 2004.
Selection
In June 2004 he succeeded Uichiro Niwa as President. His predecessor had booked extraordinary losses of ¥395.0 billion non-consolidated and ¥253.0 billion consolidated in one go in October 1999 and pushed through a restructuring to cut subsidiaries to 700 by March 2001. In the fiscal year ended March 2004, the year before he took office, the company posted a consolidated net loss of ¥31.9 billion, and the disposal of bad assets was not yet complete. The new President from the information industry side took on both the cleanup of that disposal and the rebuilding of earnings.
