Background
He joined the company in April 1983 and built his career in chemicals sales. He became Executive Officer and head of the Chemicals Division in April 2014, Managing Executive Officer in April 2017, President of the Energy & Chemicals Company in April 2018 and Senior Managing Executive Officer in April 2020. Having worked in chemicals and energy, close to natural resources, he rose to President from a position handling the non-resource earnings base.

In June 2021 he succeeded Yoshihisa Suzuki as President and COO. In the fiscal year ended March 2021, the year before he took office, consolidated revenue was ¥10,362.6 billion and net income ¥401.4 billion, with net income down from ¥501.3 billion the previous year. In June 2020 Itochu had overtaken Mitsubishi Corporation in market capitalization, and of its nearly 300 consolidated subsidiaries and affiliates, 90% had stayed profitable over the past three years. He was charged with restoring the lost profit and holding on to the top position.
