Background

After graduating from the Faculty of Economics at Keio University in 1958 he joined Fuji Bank, moving to Dai Nippon Printing in 1963. He became head of the Ichigaya No. 2 Sales Division in 1966, a Director in 1967, Managing Director in 1970 and Senior Managing Director in January 1972, and Director and Executive Vice President in August 1975. During this time he also served as Representative Director and Chairman of Dai Nippon Konpo and Dai Nippon Printing Company (Hong Kong) Limited. His father was Orie Kitajima, President from 1955.

Selection

In December 1979 he succeeded his father Orie Kitajima as Representative Director and President. In the officer listings of the Japan Company Directory he appears as Director and Executive Vice President through the 1979 edition and as President in the 1980 edition. He took four years from joining to become a Director and nine to become Senior Managing Director, whereas Hideo Honda, a Senior Managing Director listed on the same board, took 22 years from joining in 1934 to become a Director and 36 to become Senior Managing Director. In the fiscal year ended May 1979, just before he took office, non-consolidated sales were ¥373.9 billion, up 10% from the previous year.

He served as President for 38 years, from December 1979 to June 2018. Consolidated sales grew from ¥1,244.3 billion in the fiscal year ended March 1992 to ¥1,616.0 billion in the FY ended March 2008, then shrank to ¥1,412.2 billion in the FY ended March 2018. Consolidated employees increased from 34,868 in the FY ended March 2002 to 40,317 in the FY ended March 2009 and stood at 38,627 in the FY ended March 2018. The company posted a net loss of ¥20.9 billion in the FY ended March 2009 and of ¥16.3 billion in the FY ended March 2012.
