Background

He began working as Assistant General Manager at Heineken Japan in January 1987 and moved to Nippon Lever (now Unilever Japan) as Assistant Brand Manager in April 1990. He became Executive Officer for the oral care business at Sunstar in April 2000 and Vice President and head of marketing at Coca-Cola Japan in September 2006, serving from November 2008 as its Vice President and Chief Customer Officer. After a series of marketing and sales posts in Japan's consumer goods market, he became a management adviser to Takara Tomy in March 2014.

Selection

He joined as a management adviser in March 2014, became Representative Director and Executive Vice President in June of that year and Representative Director, President and CEO in June 2015, only one year and three months after joining. His predecessor Kantaro Tomiyama had been President from December 1986 to June 2015 and stayed on as Representative Director and Chairman. Kazuhiro Kojima on the same board had been a Director since June 2009, but the presidency went to Mei, who had only a short history with the company. In the fiscal year ended March 2015, just before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥149.9 billion with a net loss of ¥1.8 billion.

Initiatives

In the fiscal year ended March 2016, his first year, consolidated net sales were ¥163.1 billion with a net loss of ¥6.7 billion. The company turned to operating income of ¥7.7 billion and net income of ¥5.4 billion in the FY ended March 2017, and by the FY ended March 2018 net sales reached ¥177.4 billion, operating income ¥13.2 billion and net income ¥8.0 billion. Meanwhile, in June 2017 he gave up the CEO role to become Representative Director and President, and Kantaro Tomiyama became Representative Director, Chairman and CEO.
