Background

He joined Nissan Motor in April 1986 and in April 2014, as a Corporate Vice President, took charge of test and technology development. In April 2019 he moved to Mitsubishi Motors, where after serving as Senior Executive Officer (in charge of development) he became Representative Executive Officer (Co-COO and in charge of development) in February 2020 and Representative Executive Officer and Executive Vice President (in charge of development, product strategy, TCS and design) in April 2023. Whereas his predecessor Yasuhiro Miyaji had come up through customer sales at Bosch, Hiroshi Nagaoka came up through development on the automaker side.

Selection

In January 2025 he succeeded Yasuhiro Miyaji as Executive Officer, President and CEO, and became Representative Director in February. In November 2024, two months before taking office, he had been a part-time advisor at Japan Industrial Solutions, which manages the fund that is the largest shareholder. In the same January, its affiliated Fund No. 2 investment limited partnership became a principal shareholder with 50.78% of the voting rights, and Toyota Motor ceased to be a principal shareholder. It appears that, at the same moment the shareholders changed hands, a person with ties to the fund side was installed as President.

Initiatives

The mid-term management plan of August 2025 set operating income targets of ¥4.0 billion for fiscal 2025, ¥8.0 billion for fiscal 2027 and ¥15.0 billion for fiscal 2030. It set out a policy of closing the loss-making U.S. mechanical products plant, consolidating into a single friction materials plant, and raising the share of aftermarket products from about 20%. The plan calls for products for four-wheel vehicles to break even in fiscal 2027 and turn profitable in fiscal 2030. In April 2026 the company decided to transfer part of its stake in Guangzhou Akebono Brake, reducing its holding to 30%, and in May it booked ¥1.7 billion in improvement costs associated with consolidating to one plant in North America.
