Background

He joined Mitsui & Co. in 1933, worked in its shipbuilding department and moved to Mitsui Shipbuilding when it was established in July 1937. He served as head of engine design at the Tamano Shipyard, deputy head of the shipyard and head of the head office engineering department, becoming a Director in May 1955, Managing Director in May 1962 and Representative Director in May 1964. He became Senior Managing Director in May 1966 and Executive Vice President in May 1968. He was a shipbuilding engineer who came up entirely through design and engineering.

Education: Tokyo Imperial University, Faculty of Engineering (now University of Tokyo) (1937)

Selection

In May 1970 he became President after Shigematsu Tanaka stepped back to Director. That same month Teiji Asano moved from Executive Vice President to Chairman. Asano and Yamashita had both become Executive Vice President in May 1968; Yamashita had joined the board in May 1955, seven years after Asano in April 1948, but the gap had narrowed to one year by their appointments as Senior Managing Director in May 1965 and May 1966. After the October 1967 merger with Fujinagata Shipyard, the board numbered 20 directors as of May 1970. Execution was entrusted to Yamashita, who had overseen engineering.

Initiatives

Over his nine years in office he expanded sites and businesses. The Yura Works began operations in April 1973, Harima Koji was established in February 1974, the company took a management stake in Date Seiko that April, and an offshore structure building dock was completed at the Tamano Shipyard in February 1975. The Akishima Laboratory was established in June 1978. Non-consolidated net sales grew 2.3 times, from ¥117.9 billion in the fiscal year ended March 1970 to ¥274.2 billion in FY ended March 1975, when ordinary income reached ¥20.0 billion. In June 1979 he handed the presidency to Kazuo Maeda and moved to Chairman.
