Background
He joined in April 1981, a career employee who took 34 years to reach executive officer. He became Managing Executive Officer in April 2017 and a Director that June, and from April 2018 served as Representative Director and President of Mitsui E&S Machinery. He became President in April 2019, Representative Director that June, and also CEO in January 2020.
Selection
In April 2019 he succeeded Takao Tanaka as President. In the fiscal year ended March 2019, the year before, the company posted an operating loss of ¥59.7 billion and a net loss of ¥69.6 billion, losses that had just ballooned more than tenfold from the previous year's operating loss of ¥5.2 billion. He was promoted one year and ten months after joining the board, and four years after becoming an executive officer. The change appears to have been prompted by the widening losses.
Initiatives
In his first year, the fiscal year ended March 2020, the company posted an operating loss of ¥62.1 billion and a net loss of ¥86.2 billion on consolidated net sales of ¥786.5 billion. During his tenure he decided to withdraw from the shipbuilding business, narrowing the business down to marine engines and port cranes. Consolidated net sales fell to ¥644.7 billion in FY ended March 2021 and ¥579.4 billion in FY ended March 2022, and the operating loss narrowed from ¥62.1 billion to ¥10.0 billion.
