Background

He joined Murata Manufacturing in July 1973 and worked through overseas bases, serving as an officer of the Singapore subsidiary from June 1974 and the U.S. subsidiary from March 1978. He became a Director in June 1979, Senior Managing Director in June 1982 and Executive Vice President in June 1989. Norio Nakajima became the first president from outside the founding family in 2020; before that, presidents came from the founding family. Their capital backing was thin, however: the top ten major shareholders for the fiscal year ended March 2006 were trust banks, life insurers, Bank of Kyoto and the like, with no Murata family members individually.

Selection

He became the second president in June 1991, two years after becoming Executive Vice President in June 1989. In the fiscal year ended March 1992, his first year, consolidated net sales were ¥280.5 billion and ordinary income ¥51.5 billion. He served as President for 16 years, until June 2007. It was a succession within the founding family and appears to have entrusted him with developing a source of earnings beyond single components.

Initiatives

On December 1, 1993 he carried out an organizational reform, abolishing the technology headquarters built up by the founder and splitting it into a technology development headquarters for long-term development and a production support headquarters, placing domestic and overseas production sites directly under the business divisions, and creating a new business development headquarters. That year he built a ¥5.5 billion plant in Yasu, Shiga Prefecture with gallium arsenide semiconductor and thin-film processing lines, bringing core devices for module components in-house. He also carried on the standardization of export transactions in yen, and consolidated net income for the fiscal year ended March 1995 rose 54% to a record high.
